U.S. President Donald Trump delivered his first public speech following the midterm elections, in which his Republican Party lost control of both houses of Congress, pledging to be prepared to cooperate with the Democrats while maintaining his right to veto legislation he opposes.
Trump did not directly address the election results during his speech at the White House’s new celebration hall, but later answered journalists' questions about the implications of the electoral loss.
In commenting on remarks made by his Vice President, J.D. Vance, who linked the Republicans' losses to the war with Iran, Trump described this assertion as “largely true,” affirming that he would take the same step again if necessary.
He also denied any intention to dismiss Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, praising his performance and describing his work as “very good.”
Regarding cooperation with the Democrats, Trump expressed his openness to working with them, provided that their approaches are not “destructive,” emphasizing that he retains the authority to use the presidential veto against any legislation he does not approve.
Trump had previously stated in remarks to the "New York Times" his readiness to accept the election results and work with the Democrats, expressing his hope to reach common understandings in the coming phase.
