Reuters confirmed that the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of reaching an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop American military aid to Israel at the end of 2026 shocked the Israeli economic and security establishment, raising questions about the nature of the understanding that was reached behind the scenes, its political and military costs, and whether it is linked to Netanyahu's electoral calculations and his relationship with Trump.

Israeli press revealed a gap between Trump's announcement to halt the aid of $3.8 billion annually and ongoing negotiations to gradually reduce it over ten years.

Concerns are rising about the impact of the decision on the Israeli budget, arms deals, and the strategic alliance with Washington, amid internal disagreement over whether giving up aid will free Israeli decision-making or increase its dependency on the United States.

Journalist Keren Ohel - in a report published by Channel 12 Israel on November 3, 2026 - quoted Trump during an interview with Fox News saying, "I reached an agreement with Bibi months ago regarding four billion dollars annually. We will not pay them again, they are a successful country and do not need that," adding that the United States will assist Israel if it needs it.
