Member of the House of Representatives Abbas al-Maliki confirmed today, Thursday, that the national sovereignty of Iraq represents a red line that cannot be compromised or neglected in defending it under any circumstances, emphasizing that the government is required to take practical and proactive steps to fortify the country and preserve its security and stability against any future threats and risks.
Al-Maliki stated in a statement to the news agency that "Iraq is a fully sovereign state and will not accept its lands or airspace to be a battleground for settling regional accounts or a theater for external violations and assaults," pointing out that "protecting sovereignty is not limited to diplomatic positions and political statements, but requires building a comprehensive security and defense strategy that enforces the authority of the state and prevents any breaches of both land and air domains."
He added that "the region is witnessing rapid military and security transformations, which places the government and the general leadership of the armed forces before a doubled national responsibility to enhance the capabilities of the military system and equip it with the latest technologies and advanced air defense means," noting that "having a deterrent defensive power is the real guarantee to thwart any plans targeting the destabilization of Iraqi national security."
