Kareem Aliwi Al-Muhammadi, a member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, confirmed today, Wednesday, that closing the Shib border crossing is a dangerous and incorrect measure that can never be approved, as it poses a shock and a new challenge to the citizens of Maysan Province.
Al-Muhammadi stated in a statement received by "Video News Agency" that the government's comments regarding the crossing's unfit status are inaccurate and have no relation to reality, affirming his continuous monitoring and precise knowledge of the crossing's status, being one of the residents of Maysan Province.
He added that the Shib crossing is an important economic source for the province, and closing it will pose a new challenge for the citizens as it represents a critical artery for importing agricultural products and supporting the local economy.
Earlier today, the spokesperson for the Iraqi government, Haider Al-Abboudi, confirmed that the closure of the Shib border crossing was due to its lack of technical, technological, and developmental readiness.
Al-Abboudi said in a press interview that "suspending operations at the Shib crossing is a step toward raising the technical and logistical readiness of the crossing and was due to its lack of technical, technological, and developmental readiness," noting that "there are several border crossings that witness smooth trade exchange with Iran."
