The Administrative Court in Sulaymaniyah, affiliated with the Kurdistan Regional Council, has revoked an administrative order allowing the registration of properties, houses, and residential apartments in the names of Iraqi citizens of Arab nationality and foreign citizens.
The court's decision came during an official session, completely nullifying the order following a lawsuit filed by three lawyers from Sulaymaniyah: Amad Hama Rashid Muhammad, Klawij Muhammad Sharif, and Shwana Abdullah Abdul Rahman, against the governor of Sulaymaniyah and the entity responsible for implementing the administrative order.
The plaintiffs warned that the order, issued in 2016 by the then-governor of Sulaymaniyah, Aso Fereydoon, caused, according to their lawsuit, a significant influx of citizens coming from central and southern Iraq, along with foreign nationals, to reside and settle permanently in the city.
The plaintiffs considered the order to be a "blatant violation of Article 23 of the Iraqi Constitution," and described it as a "danger to the demographic composition of the city of Sulaymaniyah."
