The Bitcoin currency recorded a decline of over 4%, trading below the $78,000 level, amid reports of security breach suspicions at the cryptocurrency exchange platform "Binance", which led to precautionary measures including the suspension of deposit and withdrawal operations and the freezing of digital assets worth billions of dollars.
Media reports, including Bloomberg, conveyed that the platform temporarily halted some of its operations while an investigation into the security incident was opened, with disclosed data indicating the freezing of assets valued at over $2.5 billion, before the platform announced that the total frozen assets on the network had risen to nearly $3 billion.
"Binance" confirmed in a statement that the suspension of deposit and withdrawal operations was part of immediate precautionary measures, stressing that users' funds are safe, and that its teams are working in coordination with law enforcement agencies and specialized cryptocurrency intelligence companies to track and freeze assets linked to the incident.
Initial investigations indicated a potential link between the breach and a computer belonging to one of the development engineers, which may have allowed the attacker to execute unauthorized withdrawals, noting that no evidence has yet been found to prove the leakage of private keys from digital wallets.
In this context, the platform revealed that its estimates regarding the potential impact of the incident amount to around $6.3 billion, reaffirming its commitment to cover all losses through a user insurance fund and the company's private funds.
It also pledged to publish an updated version of the proof of reserves after completing processing procedures, confirming that it continues to work on enhancing its security system and containing the fallout from the incident.
This comes amid a state of anticipation prevailing in the cryptocurrency markets, with investors monitoring the results of the investigations and their potential impact on the prices of crypto assets and trader confidence in trading platforms.
