The digital prediction platform "Polymarket" announced that it was subjected to a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of funds from several users, following a breach of one of its contracted external service providers, raising questions about the security of digital platforms and the protection of user balances. The company clarified that the attackers exploited a security vulnerability in a third-party authentication system, allowing them to inject malware into the front end of the site, which enabled them to access user accounts and withdraw their balances. According to initial estimates from specialized blockchain transaction analysis firms, the value of the stolen funds ranged between $2.6 and $3.1 million, which were converted into "Ethereum" and aggregated in digital wallets controlled by the attackers. Polymarket confirmed that it is working to fully compensate all affected users, noting that the incident did not impact the platform's core infrastructure or the liquidity of its markets. This incident highlights the security risks associated with digital platforms relying on external service providers, particularly in authentication systems and user data management. Cybersecurity analysts believe that attacks targeting the front ends of applications may pose an additional challenge to traditional security systems, emphasizing the importance of conducting comprehensive security audits that include the platforms themselves and their technical partners.
