Thousands of demonstrators took to Tahrir Square in Baghdad today, Sunday, to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the October Revolution, with participants raising banners demanding a homeland, fighting corruption, and eliminating quota-based governance. Additionally, they gave the government 48 hours to reveal the murderers of the demonstrators and the parties behind them, as well as to change the electoral law.
Demonstrator engineer Abdullah Al-Halou confirmed that our demands are clear and reflect those called for by the religious authority in 2019, which include revealing the murderers of the demonstrators, whom the authority referred to as martyrs and beloved ones, identifying the entity behind the murderers, and apprehending them within 48 hours.
Al-Halou said in a statement to the Video News Agency that since 2019, the government has formed committees, distorted facts, and procrastinated on the demands, with the primary demand being to unveil the killers and the second request being to change the electoral law from the Saint-Laguë method to a multiple districts law, touching upon constitutional violations, including the increase in the dollar’s value and the creation of positions for the Prime Minister.
For his part, a citizen among the demonstrators stated that this number does not represent all the aspirations of the people, expressing deep disappointment with all the groups harmed by this system that has offered little over the past 23 years. He affirmed that the demonstration represents only a small part of the real demands for living with dignity, freedom, and prosperity.
The citizen told the Video News Agency that the country possesses enormous resources which require stopping the major corrupt figures and ensuring a decent living for citizens and retirees, calling on the Iraqi people to awaken and express their rights, and not to leave decisions in the hands of the parties that control the resources.
