The Minister of Interior in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Reber Ahmed, announced today, Sunday, the signing of an official Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Ministry of Interior, which includes the registration and mutual collection of traffic fines and violations between the Kurdistan Region and the other provinces of Iraq.
Ahmed stated in a statement followed by the News Video Agency that "the previous phase witnessed a lack of joint coordination, which allowed vehicles registered in the Kurdistan Region to evade fines when committing violations in the federal provinces, and the same applies to vehicles from other provinces when committing violations inside the region's cities.
He clarified that "the new memorandum stipulates the registration of any traffic violation committed by vehicles from the region in the central and southern provinces and the collection of its amounts legally, and applying the same procedure to vehicles coming from various provinces of Iraq when committing violations inside the Kurdistan Region.
Ahmed pointed out that "traffic laws and legislations are unified in essence at the country level, with slight differences in some executive instructions or the amounts of fines, confirming that the new understanding addresses these aspects in a manner that achieves justice and ensures the enforcement of the law.
He emphasized that "the main goal of the agreement is to regulate traffic and enhance public safety, stressing the commitment of the Interior Ministries in Erbil and Baghdad to minimize violations and offenses, and to establish traffic discipline on the roads and streets throughout Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
