The Babil Provincial Council announced today, Wednesday, the formation of a specialized oversight committee to address rising prices and regulate local markets, in light of the repercussions of changes in the dollar exchange rate against the Iraqi dinar.
Babil Provincial Council Chairman, Asaad Al-Muslimawi, stated in a press interview that he attended by the Chief of Police in Babil, heads of security agencies, and heads of administrative units, to discuss the implications of the dollar exchange rate change on the prices of food, construction materials, and medicines, and the need to take measures to limit unjustified price increases and prevent the exploitation of citizens.
He added that "the council decided to form an oversight committee headed by the first deputy to the Governor of Babil, with the membership of representatives from the relevant departments, under the supervision of the provincial council, to monitor the markets and track the prices of essential goods, in coordination with the heads of administrative units and specialized agencies, and to take legal actions against violators."
He explained that "the decisions included tightening oversight on pharmacies and medicine prices to prevent manipulation and exploitation of patients' needs, as well as intensifying oversight campaigns on food traders to prevent arbitrary and unjustified price increases and hold violators accountable."
Al-Muslimawi emphasized that "the participation of security agencies, heads of administrative units, and relevant departments will enhance field monitoring and direct follow-up on violations, which contributes to curbing price manipulation and achieving stability in the markets."
He pointed out that "these measures come in response to increasing demands to monitor markets, unify food prices, and limit the exploitation of economic changes, in light of the burden faced by families due to rising prices."
