The presidencies confirmed in their meeting today, Monday, that the decision of peace and war should be in the hands of the state, and that weapons should be within the framework of constitutional and legal institutions, addressing the presence of weapons outside the authority of the state in accordance with constitutional and legal frameworks and in alignment with timelines set by the government, to strengthen state sovereignty and preserve the security of the country and the unity of national decision-making.
The media office of the presidency stated in a statement received by the Video News Agency that President Nizar Amedi hosted the presidencies' meeting at the Baghdad Palace, which included Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaydi, Speaker of the House of Representatives Haibat Al-Halbousi, and President of the Supreme Judicial Council Faiq Zidan, to discuss the developments of the general situation in the country along with the updates in the region.
It clarified that the meeting underscored the importance of consolidating security and political and societal stability, continuing to work to meet citizens' needs in a way that contributes to improving living and service conditions, and enhances trust in state institutions. It noted that the Prime Minister presented a summary of his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, which included meetings with world leaders and officials of international organizations to enhance Iraq's relations in a way that serves its common interests.
It added that the meeting discussed the preparations for celebrating Sovereignty Day as an occasion that affirms the completion of the Iraqi sovereignty path, emphasizing that the coming phase will witness the transition of relations with the international community to broader horizons of economic, commercial, and cultural cooperation. It reaffirmed the attendees' support for the Iraqi government's request to exempt Najaf Airport from the U.S. Treasury Department's measures regarding Iranian airlines' flights to the airports of regional countries.
It continued that the meeting emphasized the importance of completing the ministerial cabinet to enhance government work and improve performance levels to enable the government to implement its program and respond to citizens' demands. It also reiterated the legislative issue's focus on enhancing the work of the House of Representatives and speeding up the completion and legislation of priority laws that impact citizens' lives, activating the oversight role to consolidate the principles of responsibility and accountability, and supporting the government's measures and the judiciary's efforts in combating administrative corruption and holding violators accountable.
The statement confirmed that the presidencies discussed the economic situation in light of regional tensions and their implications for the national economy, emphasizing the necessity of taking steps to face them to enhance the economy's ability to deal with changes, reiterating Iraq's firm position calling for ending tensions, defusing crises, and prioritizing dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful means to resolve disputes, which contributes to achieving security and stability in the region and protecting its peoples from further repercussions.
