The Baghdad Municipality announced today, Thursday, the launch of a community afforestation campaign on the Al-Qadisiyyah Corniche, with the participation of a select group of artists, media figures, athletes, analysts, and politicians, aimed at raising environmental awareness and increasing green spaces in the capital.
The spokesperson for the municipality, Adi Al-Jindil, stated in a statement followed by the News Video Agency that "the campaign is part of the autumn season for afforestation, which aims to plant 190,000 permanent trees in various areas of Baghdad, with wide participation from community elites and different segments of citizens."
He added that "the event aims to convey a message about the importance of afforestation and preserving trees, and to encourage citizens to contribute to increasing green spaces, while the municipality continues to implement its daily campaigns to plant long-lived trees in the capital."
He explained that the municipality relies on certain types of trees, notably Albizia and Acacia, for their ability to withstand high temperatures and provide shade and humidity, pointing out that all municipal departments have been directed to provide irrigation and spraying systems to ensure the sustainability of the planted trees.
Al-Jindil confirmed the continuation of the campaign until the goal of planting 190,000 trees is achieved, noting that the municipality has prepared Albizia and Acacia trees and flowers to be planted as part of the ongoing activities in the capital's areas.
