The American judiciary prevents Trump from accessing the citizenship data of millions of voters.

A federal appeals court in the U.S. rejected a request from President Donald Trump's administration to lift the ban on using a federal immigration database to verify the accuracy of citizenship records in state voter rolls.

In a ruling issued yesterday, Friday, by a majority of two votes to one, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia denied lifting the ban imposed by a lower court on the use of the "Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements" database by the Department of Homeland Security.

The previous ruling had determined that the government could not use this system before the midterm elections scheduled for November 3, in which Republicans will attempt to maintain their narrow majority in Congress.

Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan and Circuit Judge Robert Wilkins, both appointed by former President Barack Obama to the appeals court, upheld the lower court's decision stating that the verification system violates Social Security law because it shares personal information about millions of Americans.

The appeals court judges also pointed to concerns about the potential for inaccurate citizenship information, which could force individuals to prove their citizenship to remain registered in voter rolls, and in some cases could even lead to their voter registration being canceled.

Circuit Judge Gregory Katsas, who was appointed by Trump, dissented from the majority opinion.

A judge in Florida had ordered in July that the Department of Homeland Security resume granting four Republican-led states access to the database, after another judge had prevented the department from continuing to use the database nationwide.
