The Head of the Public Relations and Government Communication Authority in the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Saad Ma'an, emphasized today, Saturday, the importance of enhancing legal culture among journalists and media professionals, and adhering to professional standards and regulations governing journalistic work, in a way that ensures the protection of freedom of expression while maintaining security and stability.
A statement from the office received by the Video News Agency indicated that Ma'an participated in an educational workshop organized by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate at its headquarters, under the title (Media Legislation and Legal Protection), with the participation of a number of journalists and media professionals.
The statement added that the workshop addressed the legislation, laws, and judicial decisions related to journalistic work, the principles of the Federal Court of Cassation, and the directives of the Supreme Judicial Council, as well as reviewing the legal and professional pathways for practicing media work responsibly.
The statement quoted Ma'an as confirming that freedom of opinion and expression is constitutionally guaranteed, but practicing it requires adherence to professional and legal responsibility, pointing out the existence of non-objective media practices that involve circulating misleading information or publishing details related to security issues, field duties, and security movements.
He warned that publishing such information could lead to consequences that affect security and stability, affirming that legal actions would be taken against violations that fall within this framework.
In conclusion, Ma'an welcomed efforts aimed at enhancing legal protection for journalists and media professionals and expanding their knowledge of the regulations governing journalistic work, achieving a balance between ensuring freedom of expression, professional responsibility, and protecting community security.
