The Director of Media for the Iraqi Premier League, Hussein Al-Khursani, announced a tendency to reconsider the current season's match schedule for 2026-2027, following the decision to postpone the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, in order to ensure the organization of local competitions and accommodate the commitments of clubs and the national team.
Al-Khursani stated, in a statement followed by the Video News Agency, that the administration of the Iraqi Premier League will study the current dates and the possibility of modifying them to align with the recent developments that have affected the schedule of continental and international tournaments.
He added that the upcoming decision will take into account the commitments of the national team and the clubs participating in external tournaments, which will contribute to organizing the competition in the best possible way.
He explained that the league will pause for two weeks according to the current schedule, coinciding with the holding of the Basra Four Nations Friendly Tournament, which will bring together the teams of Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine, during the period from November 10 to 17.
He indicated that the Iraqi national team, led by its Australian coach Graham Arnold, seeks to utilize the tournament to test a number of players and assess their readiness for upcoming international commitments.
This tendency comes following the decision of the Asian Football Confederation to postpone the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which will be hosted by Saudi Arabia, to take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, instead of its previous date early next year.
