The Argentine star Lionel Messi mourned Jesus de Miguel, a player from the Spanish club Tenerife, who passed away at the age of 30.
De Miguel died after sustaining a horrific injury in a match between Tenerife and Andorra.
Messi posted a story on Instagram, shared by the video news agency, featuring a picture of the late player, commenting: "There are no words, I extend my deepest condolences and wish all the patience and strength to his family and friends. May he rest in peace."
Alongside Lionel Messi, the clubs Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, the Spanish Football Federation, and UEFA mourned Jesus de Miguel.
The "Merengue" team wrote on its official website: "The club, its president, and the board deeply regret the death of De Miguel, Real Madrid wants to express its condolences and love to his family, his teammates, his club, and all his loved ones."
Barcelona said: "With great sadness, we received the news of the death of Jesus de Miguel. The club extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to his family, friends, and loved ones, and expresses its solidarity with them in this great tragedy."
UEFA announced a minute of silence in all European competition matches this week in honor of his memory.
What injury did de Miguel sustain?
In stoppage time, at 90+, with a score of 2-2, the goalkeeper of Andorra, Jesus Ouno, attempted to clear an aerial ball from outside the penalty area near the midfield.
At that moment, Jesus Ouno's knee struck hard against the chest and head of Jesus de Miguel, who was trying to get the ball, causing him to fall to the ground.
The Tenerife player lost consciousness and became motionless, suffering a cardiac arrest, as the medical team rushed to treat him before he was transported by ambulance to the hospital, prompting referee Manuel Hernandez to show a red card to Jesus Ouno and blow the final whistle shortly before the end of the match.
The player remained in intensive care at the hospital, and after about 12 hours, he took his last breath.
